I have the RocketRaid 1720 controller. I installed it into a Windows Vista Home machine and planning to setup a RAID1 array for the drives. When I try to create the RAID, it says the drives have to initialize and in order to do that, both drives must be wiped of their data. Is there another way to get them both into a RAID1 without losing data on both drives? I'm in the process of copying the data to a 3rd drive right now. I would also like to know if I wipe both drives and set them in a RAID1 array, are there going to be any problems with it going to legacy mode when I go to copy the data back onto the drives from the third drive?

If anyone has experience with this card and Windows Vista, any input would be appreciated. TIA!

That behavior is normal, that the drives that where not in a RAID would get wiped when placed into a RAID...

I don't understand what you mean by LEGACY MODE when you copy data onto the RAID... once the RAID is set up, and you have booted into VISTA, and the drivers are setup for the card, then copy the data over to the the mirrored drives and all should be well...

PS: no I do not have experience with that card... we mainly use 3ware or Adaptec cards for our RAID setups...

Well on most systems I have done, the machines are at the point of the OS loaded and everything. I would just plug the drives into the RAID card and then the 2nd drive would get wiped so the RAID can be completed. When I did that in this situation, the main drive (with the OS and everything) was showing in a LEGACY mode, which according to the message, it had to be wiped as well to create the RAID. I was trying to find a way around that as at the time, I did not have a 3rd spare drive (that was large enough) to copy the drive to.

I eventually just had to get a 3rd drive, clone the main drive to that, wipe the other 2 drives, get the RAID setup and then clone the drive back.
