roblem importing outlook .pst files

I'm trying to import a .pst file into outlook. However once I have selected the file to import I am told that:

Properties for this information service must be defined prior to use.

followed by...

File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\documents...

The .pst came from a WinNT/Outlook98 computer using a diffrent user name from the target computer which uses Win2K/Outlook2K.

Is this just a permissions thing? What can I do about it?

Try using Tools, Services, and add a personal folder, then point this new service to the file in question. This may allow you to "import" it effectively.

can you explain further. Tools|Services? I can't seem to find that? Is it in the Outlook menu?

When you are in Outlook, click on the tools menu at the top. Then go down to services. You should have an option in the box that pops up to ADD a "personal folder." It will then allow you to browse out to find the .pst file you want to add. ELS

I came across this before... My problem was because the .pst file was read only (transferred from a cd)

I'm sorry but I have looked several times and cannot seem to find the menu item you speak of in the Tools menu. I am using Outlook from Office 2000. Having said that I can't find it on Outlook 98 either.

Yes! Mine too are from a CD. The first thing I did was copy my files to my hard disk in case Outlook needed to write to the files for some reason. However, I never actually tried re-set the read only flag for the file.

How did you get round your problem? Did you have to resort to another medium?

There is another way to get to the services popup box. Go to Start--->settings--->control panel. In control panel double-click on mail. That will get you to the same area I was speaking of. Longlivegoku

You probably don't see the Services menu because you are not using the Corporate Workgroup installation of Outlook but probably the IMO installation.

Right mouse click on the .pst file and select properties. Uncheck the READ-ONLY attribute if it is still on. joegz

Yeah it was just the read only attribute. Worked fine after changing that.

I already unchecked "read only" in the properties box for a bunch of .pst files I copied from CD... and I still get this error. Any other suggestions? I've used scanpst.exe, too, and the files have no errors.

I'm using Outlook 2002, when I try to import a .pst file I am given the error message of access is denied you do not have the required permissions to access the file. I've tried removing the read-only attribute. I've tried copying it to my hard drive. No luck. Any thoughts? Thanks you.

I am also having the same problem. I backed the PST to a CD, copied it on my hard drive, removed the read only attribute and no luck. I attempted to define a new service pointing to the PSt but get an error that the file is not a PST. Any ideas?
