roaming profile failure

One of the XP workstations on the NT server is producing an error on shutdown, saying it cannot write to the roaming profile - possibly a network problem or insufficientaccess rights. The user has full access to the drive and directory where the profile is stored.
He had a lot of "stuff" on the desktop that I cleaned up - still not working. I renamed his profile directory and made a new one - same problem. What am I missing?
