RNAAPP Grief (loading & staying resident)

I have a box which is giving me no end of trouble with rnaapp, generally allowing only one good ISP connection
per boot. If I manually close rnaapp (C/A/Delete), a further connection is not a problem, but the machines user is not satisfied with having to "mess around" like this (who can blame him).

This is not an ISP issue, it happens with any / all ISPs.

spec is as follows;

Win98se,
IE6,
DUN 1.4,
Spybotted,
Hijackthissed,
looks clean,
otherwise working USR Winmodem.

RNAAPP is loading at start-up, presumably because the "always dial my default connection" is checked, I can get rid of it at start-up by selecting "never dial a connection", but this is not really an option for the user?

As said one connection session is OK, but each further one requires rnaapp to be manually closed before connecting.

Are there any toys or tricks which will close rnaapp when connection to the ISP is closed, or othertwise solve my problem?

Many thanks in advance.

I would first look and see if any background softwares are running, spyware or even windows auto update. Uninstall them. Sounds like an application wants to dial out on bootup. Run MSCONFIG, go to startup tab, uncheck anything suspicious. Also check for spywares using SPYBOT, from
If it persists, delete the dial up connection, reinstall dial up networking, and recreate the connection.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Kill the winmodem startup entry in \run REG key. It'll load on it's own when called ... The Rnaapp will close on it's own, after a certain amount of time (3-5 min.) from disconnection...don't know offhand how to time set it.... except to use Kill /f utility in a batch(basically ctrl+alt+del anyways) so.
I may not be full understanding the prob, though

OK TekTippy4U, that sounds like the sort of thing that I am looking for.

Is there anyway that this Kill/f command could be worked from a desktop icon, which would close rnaapp and then open IE in one click? I presume that if this could be done, it would make the operation invisible to the end user?

Also - Im don't know much about batch commands, any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Ok then;
I have the 98 Resource Kit (with CD) and Kill.exe is a part of it.....
It's also available with WinNT Resource Kit...

However The win98 OEM FE CDROM (and Full Retail, I suspect) has a Resource kit "sampler" (some tools, including some general help, and a good book about 98)..;
<drive>:\tools\rekit\setup.exe
<drive>:\tools\reskit\help\rk98book.chm
<drive>:\tools\reskit\help\win98rk.hlp
BUT NO kill.exe on it;

====================
From Win98 Resource Kit;
KILL.EXE is a command-line utility you can use to end one or more tasks or processes.

When using KILL, you can specify a process by its process ID number, any part of its process name, or its window title, if it has a window. You can use TLIST, a utility included with this Resource Kit, to find the process names and process IDs of currently running processes.

With KILL, you can also specify how the process is to be stopped: you can have KILL send it a command telling it to halt itself, or have KILL force the process to end.

Note For users of Kill.Exe on the Windows NT platform, note that on Windows 98 Kill.Exe will silently fail while reporting success if you try to kill a process that has open files with unsaved changes. To force a kill on such a process, type Kill /F process_id.
====================

possibly d/l from here;
don't know if Kill.exe is included..

shows "Alphabetical List of Tools in the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit Supplement 4" as this seems to be the same tools (and moe) that's on the 98 RK CD....

I'd be a little careful with mixing NT Server versions, with a 98 version needed,(test it on a separate test box).... *though* TweakUI for 98 from MS site,
which is less buggy than 98 CDROM (ver.1.33) is D/l from an NT version domain.....so YMMV

I know my Explorer.exe and Shell32.exe versions are 4.72 (NT ver)....so not sure, if it would matter, if you can get your hands on it (Kill.exe)....I don't think it's legal for me to email you off-forum, so i'll stop there with that thought.

Tlist.exe (Task List is helpful too for identifying the running tasks/services).....
========================
From Win98 Resource Kit; also
The Task List Viewer is a command-line utility that displays a list of tasks, or processes, currently running on the local computer. For each process, it shows the process ID number, process name, and, if the process has a window, the title of that window.
========================

D/l from link and see if available, then I may possibly be able to help a "little" with a batch.

Others here are much better at batch syntax than I...so I'm sure more help is not far off

Off the top of my head, I'm trying to figure a possible diff tack, though I don't think TweakUI or Sys Poledit would be much help for this prob....(just the kill command, comes to mind)..

What a pain in the $#%#*For such a small 16bit command line utility..
....after reading a couple of info links from a "Kill.exe" quick/brief search on google..it seems that Kill.exe is NOT available as a separate d/l.....there must be some shareware or freeware available that does the same..

.....I'd say unless you get a freeware/shareware utility that does the same (or maybe a friend has 98 RK, or d/l the NT server tools and try....for now use Ctrl+alt+del, then up/down arrows to get to rnaapp and hit Enter to Kill it..
