I have a customer who has had 5x Reach Line Cards with 9150s running for many years. While preparing for an upgrade to 6.0, we were downloading firmware to the 3905 sets that are connected on the far end to the 9150 units. The switch INI'd on the first try, but the next attempt to the same phone worked, and then the next 2 attempts to another phone failed. I looked at the RLCs and the IP address is in the ELAN subnet. My first thought is that this is incorrect, but I have come up empty in the RLC NTPs as far as specific requirements. Do any of you RLC experts have thoughts about the IP on the RLC and could that cause the firmware upgrade to fail on these phones or possibly cause the INI? All firmware downloads within the main site work fine, however the other fiber and carrier remotes also have random problems updating 3900 set firmware.

thanks much
rob

Two things:

- Nothing other than connections labeled ELAN should actually be on that subnet. The IP connections for the RLC cards should be in their own VLAN.

- I managed to lock up the TTY downloading firmware to 3905 sets that were directly connected to the switch, which caused me to have to INI the system to free up the TTY. I ended up force downloading (FDLF) all of my 3905 phones; after locking the system twice I wasn't going to try the third time.

Also, do you have the possibility to bring the 3905 phones on-site (directly connected to DLCs) to do their upgrades? The TNs would only need enough programming to bring up the phone to do the upgrade.

...I had no problem upgrading 3902, 3903 and 3904 phones hanging off of RLCs.

Also, you might see what level firmware you have on the RLC; mine (were) at 1.5.2; the latest is 1.6.x.

thanks.......our RLCs are on 1.6.1.....most of the 3905s are at the main site and we haven't had any issues with the ones at the main site yet. When you were doing all of your fw downloads, did you only use the manual procedure in LD 32 (FDLU or FDLF), or did you use the schedule feature of LD 97. We have only been testing via manual download FDLU. Since we have over 1300 sets, I will need to eventually start the automated process to run in the evenings.

thanks again for the help
rob

I have no remote 3905, and so few (15-20 total) that I just did the force download individually, although in LD 97 I believe you can also flag the scheduled downloads as Force.

For the remainder I used the schedule features of LD 97, although on my system (CS1000E cabinets) it will only do one download per MGC (someone has said one per XPEC) instead of being able to do 4 at a time as before.
