Ris 2k3 but DHCP on 2k.

Hi Guys/Girls,

I am trying to get Ris working in a mixed Win2k/2k3 environment. I have installed RIS on a Win2k3 box and it seems to be fine. Uploaded an basic XP image.
Now when i try to get a machine to install on its own, it gets an IP address from our Win2k dhcp server but then after that it doesnt seem to go to the RIS box to get the image. It seems like it looks for images on the DHCP server. Any ideas?

Have you selected the "Respond to client computers requesting service" box?

In Active Directory right click the computer account of the RIS server and you will see a new 'Remote Install' tab, you will see the box i mean in there this needs to be set before the RIS server will service requests.

yep done that. It gets the ip address of the WIN2k server then goes to the blue screen with the options, it then seems to look on the DHCP server for images rather than moving onto the RIS machine.

The blue screens are generated by the RIS server do you get the option to enter a username and password and select the Flat XP Image?

Also make sure that the TFTP and BINL services are running.

Both services are running. I enter the username and password and it gives me options from our old Win2k Ris server which no longer exists, we got a 2k3 one so we can roll out XP images easier.

Do you have DHCP scope options 066 or 067 pointing to your old RIS server?

Nope i even tried pointing them to my new server. No joy.

Did you authorise the new RIS server in the DHCP console?


1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DHCP.
2. In the left pane, right-click DHCP, and then click Manage Authorized Servers.
3. If your server is not listed, click Authorize, type the name or the IP address of the RIS server, and then click OK.

Nope the new RIS server is not a DHCP server, i thought it doesnt need to be as the DHCP server is handling that. Is that where im going wrong?

Was your old server authorised in there?

I'm pretty sure the RIS server needs authorising as well.

It might not have to be but i can't see many other areas where you can be misconfigured.
