Don't even know if I am in the right forum for this
kind of question :

I am trying to set up a web server for our company
(some extra work with pain but no pay). Anybody
can give me some idea where to start or where to
dig material for this. Tks for the tip.

Are you planning to place it on your own facilities?
Networker1 - Rent-a-PCTech.Com
WebManager - WebLatino.Net
Servicing Puerto Rico & The Caribbean

Is the web server for in company use?
Or for internet users?
Or both?
I pledge to share any information I have and advise to the best of my knowledge based on the information provided.

We are planning to setup our own hardware. Just want
to know what hardware are necessary apart from
a computer (p4/w 512 M ram good enough?) What
software do we need (window 2000 server in mind)
what else (java ? ) We are building everything from
scratch so it would be nice if you guys can point out
where we can get those learning materials for doing
so. Our company can spare the time (for us to learn)
but not the high price (if we hire other company to
do it for us)

Needs...
**Hardware...computer with a lot of ram (more than 512 MB minimum)
**Firewall for security

**Server operating system...lots of different opinions on that..but 2000 server is one of them.IIS (Internet Information Server) or similar must be installed and configured.
Note : Microsoft has books of instruction for using IIS, as do all of the other setups, which would be a good investment if you plan to do this yourself.

**Need to register a domain name...so that you have your own
**A permanent reliable internet connection with a static (non changing) IP address.

I don't think I missed anything, but I am not an expert on this area of technical. Others feel free to post please if I have omitted.

You need to do a LOT of research before you attempt this.

There are many variables, and I think you should hit the books before you even contemplate starting this, so that you know not only what you will need for what you are doing, but what you may need in the future.
Setting this type of thing up should be done by someone who knows what he/she is doing, as there are many things that can go wrong.
Security is a big issue also.

Hope this helps..

Hi KimberTech,

Tks for the input, but any site I can get the details?

It's hard to give any answer that would be more than a guess without knowing exactally what you are looking to do. Is this server going to be for internal use or will it be a "live" server on the net?
Are you going to look for a couple hits an hour (day?) or are you looking at 100s of hits a minute?
it this just going to be static web pages or will there be streaming audio/video?
what kind of connection will you have? ISDN / cable/ DLS / T1?

If you want to have a good discussion about this, contact me at bmartin@citenet.net with the details on what you are planning and I'll try to give you a better idea as to what you'll need for hardware and software.

Ben is right, that is why I asked what your server will be doing, and what you plan to use it for.
There are so many variables, it is really hard to even start to give you any advice at all.

If you identify what you need the server to do NOW...and what you plan to do with it in the future, then we can give you more help.

Have a great day.

Our first step is to let clients to log in to check their monthly statements.
There are about 600 of them. Frist assume that they will do so at the
end of month (lets say for 5 days) usually at night time. The application
will take about 3 minutes the most to generate the report for each client.
As time goes by, the enquiries may spread out throughout the month,
but the no. of clients will also grow (take it for 10-20/month). What
will it do in the future, I don't even have the slightest idea. If the loading
is to shoot up, I think the boss will allow for more investment. (She is a
reasonable person and willing to spend on investment that can give
returns) Hopefully the report generation can execute on the web server
too. There is a file server existing already which holds the corp. data.
I don't know if that kind of info is good enough for planning the server?

What languages will you be writing your scripts in? (ASP, PHP, Perl, or other cgi languages)

what OS do you want to work with? some form of unix or a windows OS?

will this system need to run a database or will it be retrieving information from another computer on a network?

We will be probably using w2k server and frontpage.
As I said, there is a server existing on the network
already. The report generation program is in VFP

I recommend a Xeon Processor instead of a P4 for a scalablility.
If you are using VFP, if you are a programmer or you have one in the office, try to integrate the power of VFP and the web, such as FoxIsapi. Check out
Last, Xeon processor will give you better performance especially with an scsi 10k/rpm hdd and 512 Ram. You should be straight!

My little $.02 :) AK
