When I right click on the Start button, I get a menu. One item on this menu is 'Explore'. When I click it, Windows Explorer opens. The default folder for this appears to be 'C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Start Menu'. I would prefer if it opened to 'C:'.

Does anyone know how I can change the default folder that it opens?

I guess it is not really possible,
The start menu is just another folder with shortcuts, and if you right click on it and say explore, you basically say, explore this folder.

But i think adding a shortcut pointing to

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe C:\

in your quicklaunch bar will do what you want.

just creating a shortcut pointing to "C:" works, theres no need for the %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe part :). You could put that in the quick launch just next to "Start"

As for the start menu, I think DaOtH is correct, you are just selecting to explore that particular folder so I don't think you will be able to change the location it points to.

It's not EXACTLY what you want, but closer to what you're getting...

Press the Windows icon + E on keyboard.

(Windows icon should be between ctrl and alt)

Nice little shortcut. I use it all day!

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Right-clicking on the Start Button on my machine (Classic View), displays a pop-up menu with all entries hard coded to the Start Menu folder (Explore, indicates explore the start menu folder). Left clicking on the Start button brings up various links some of which can be added or removed via the Properties window of the Taskbar and Start Menu (or group policy).

To set paths and add switches the shortcut properties need to display a Target box for you to edit.
