I recently bought a HP Pavilion dv2815ea laptop which came with Vista. I have installed Windows 2003 server on it ('m a web developer before you ask) and everything works great apart from the ricoh 5 in 1 card reader. I installed the drivers recommeded by HP support
RICOH OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Ricoh Memory Stick Controller
Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller
Ricoh xD-Picture Card Controller
and according to the device manager they all say this 'device is working' in their details, but when I insert a SD card although the blue light next to the socket shows the card is not displayed. Looking under disk mangement its not there either. If I put a Sony memory card in a 'Ricoh memory disk device appears under disk drives in device manager but with a yellow exclamation next to it and the error device cannot start. (Code 10).

Iv'e tried various other versions of the drivers and again they all say they are working but I can't get it to recognise an SD Card.

I can't really go to HP as the O/S is not supported by them (though they were helpful in getting the system working) so wondered if anyone can advise what may be going wrong, or how to sort this problem. If it was drivers not working I could understand it - am I pershaps missing something?

Its not a great problem (I could always get a usb hub or something) and the computers running great otherwise but it would be nice to crack this problem

Thanks wahnula, but unfortuntely didn't help:-(

First of all, did you install the chipset drivers?

these incorporate fixes that may alleviate the problem...

also, could you post the VEN&DEV numbers from the device manager, this would help in locating correct/different drivers...

Ben,

Installed
Intel Chipset Device Software 9.1.0.1012
and Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family Video Driver

Ricoh Memory Stick Controller 6.0.11
Ricoh SD/MMC Controller 6.0.3.2
Ricog xD-Picture Card Controller 6.0.1.13
RICOH OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller 6.0.6001.18000

Also tried
Cardreader_RICOH_R5C8xx_v3.51_XP_Vista

and a number of other versions. Each time it says they are working. If it gave an error I could understand, but the device manager doesnt. Only time it does is when you put in a Sony memory stick. When you put the in it seems to recognise theres a stick as Ricoh Memory Stick Disk Device appears under Disk drives but with an exclamation mark next to it and the error This device cannot start. (Code 10).

With the SD Card though nothing appears.

Hope that helps

double click it, then go to the DETAILS tab, there is a drop down menu, look for HARDWARE ID, and then post the VEN & DEV numbers...

other than that, it may be that the card reader is moot...

...or this post is. For $3.99-5.99, you cab get a USB dongle that plugs into the laptop and reads your favorite memory card. The drawback to these mini-size readers is limited support for card types, so you'll need more than one:

BadBigBen,Sorry, I assume this is what you wanted

RIMSPTSK\DISK&VEN_RICOH&PROD_MEMORYSTICKSTORAGE&REV_1.00\MS0001

Thanks

wahnula,

Realise you can get a cheap alternative so it's not that important, but it would be useful having a built in unit rather than having to carry a seperate one (which I would probably forget). Dont think it's moot, the card reader worked fine in Vista and windows 7, its just something Iv'e not been able to resolve in Win 2003 server. It may be that its just not be possible, I had problems installing win 2003 initialy because it didn't recognise SATA drives but managed to find a workaround. It took a while with other things too but eventually I got everything working apart from this.

This is on the Ricoh Memory stick controller
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_30CD103C&REV_12\4&3B3A03B5&0&4BF0

This on the SD/MMC Host Controller
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_30CD103C&REV_12\4&3B3A03B5&0&4AF0

Ricoh xD-Picture Card
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0852&SUBSYS_30CD103C&REV_12\4&3B3A03B5&0&4CF0

This on Ricoh OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0832&SUBSYS_30CD103C&REV_05\4&3B3A03B5&0&48F0

Iv'e noticed on the web a lot of Linux users also having trouble with getting this 5-in-1 card working on their operating systems

uninstall the drivers... then download the following (older driver):

install it, then reboot and retest...

if it does not work, then I do believe that the hardware may be damaged... you could also try another USB cable to the printer...

PS: Linux hardware problems are NO indication for windows at all... the reason is that most manufacturers DO NOT make linux drivers for their hardware, thus enthusiasts (some of the best programmers out there) try to make drivers for all sorts of hardware, without having the resources (spec sheets, API's etc...) that the manufacturer has...

BadBigBen,

Tried the drivers but not joy. You might be right about the card reader just not working. When I get the chance I'll create a disk image of my 2003 install then reload original Vista image I made and see if its working under that. Its not that urgent though and Iv'e still got 9 months cover that came with the Laptop if it is that so should be able to get it fixed

Thanks to you and everyone else for their help

Reinstalled vista an both the 5in1 worked fine with all cards. I then restored my win 2003 and found that I was missing the Microsoft SD Standard Compliant Host controller. After getting hold of this and installing it the SD Card now workd. Still got the problem with Sony cards - it sees its ther but gives an error

SD card is working fine now in win 2003 but when I insert the Sony card I get under Ricoh memory stick disk device
This device cannot start. (Code 10).

The Sony card is recognised and runs ok if I'm running Vista.

I found if I run the setup in MSMMC_V1_0_1_1_Logo.zip I found on the web it shows both a memory card icon and a SD card icon all the time and if I insert either type of card it can read them. However it always shows these icons whether or not there is a memory card inserted or an SD card in the slot or not so this is no good. It also gives a service error so its not really practical to use and I went back to the previous registry to get rid of this. It does however show the card can be read and its not the hardware, just some device setting thats giving the Code 10.

Least Ive got the SD card being recognised.

>BadBigBen
>Have you tried to use the 5 in 1 card reader on another USB port yet?

Its a built in card reader, would this apply? and if so how do I do it?
Thanks
AndyH1

AndyH1, I am assuming that this is build into a Ricoh Printer...

remove the USB cable to the printer and plug it into another port, it should detect new hardware and install all the necessary drivers for the printer and 5in1 card reader...

if it is not build into a printer, but rather in the PC itself, then ignore what I wrote...
