Having recently installed RH7.3 on a partition of my machine that is running Windows 2000 as the primary OS, I have experienced boot sector problems which have resulted in the drive being unreadable and needing replacing.

I believe this may be down to some incorrect confiugration on my part, or perhaps my hard disks life span had ran out.

Just wondering if anybody has experienced anything similar????

All comments/suggestions welcomed.

Thanks,

Carl.

You should use Lilo from linux. If you want to use dual boot on your system

Normally RH uses Grub by default as a bootloader, when you installed RH did you skip the config bit where you could choose where the bootloader will be installed? On the same menu you could have chosen the default startup system and where to install the bootloader to.

It's possible it was installed in a boot partition which is outside the 1024 cylinders bootable boundery, you should have install it on the hda (Windows) partition. IBM Certified Confused - MQSeries
IBM Certified Flabbergasted - AIX 5 pSeries System Administration

I think the Linux is loaded beyond the readable area of boot sector.once you install Linux do the following
root#cd /etc
etc#vi lilo.conf

in lilo.conf, change the "Normal" option to "Lba32".and then run the lilo.conf and reboot the machine.
I think this should resolve the problem.Let me know on this.
Try it out.
