Hello All

I have just set up a Reverse DNS delegation for a customer of ours. I have set up a range with 64 host addresses and assigned that range to our names servers. We then pass across the delgation by using a REV_ZONE entry with CNAMES for each address this is below;

$TTL 3w
123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN SOA ns1.doughnut.com. webmaster.doughnut.com. (
2008051507 ; Serial

1h ; Retry after 1 hour
3w ; Expire after 3 weeks
1h ) ; Negative caching TTL of 1 hour

The RIPE delegation is fine and when I try to dig on a name server outside our network I get back the answer of;

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;41.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR

;; ANSWER SECTION:
41.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. 604800 IN CNAME 41.0.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa.

It does not come back with the correct name record from the servers at the compnays site. This ghad been previously working but suddenly stopped. If there is any chance some one can glance over the zone file and see if they can see any thing wrong, I would be most greatful. If you need to know any more information please reply and I willl respond staright away.

Fank you very much.

The first thing you need to do is to change the CNAME records you have to the following:

1 IN CNAME 1.0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa.
2 IN CNAME 2.0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa.

And in your 123.123.99.in-addr.arpa zone file you will need to add the following NS records:

0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN NS ns1.customer’s server.com.
0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN NS ns2.customer’s server.com.

Your customer will have to create the zone 0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. In that file they need to create the records like the this:

1.0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR something.customer.com.
2.0-63.123.123.99.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR somethingelse.customer.com.

Or

1 IN PTR something.customer.com.
2 IN PTR somethingelse.customer.com.
