We took our old Exch5.5 server off of the network and put in a new Exch2000 server. Is there a way for me to copy mail from the 5.5 server onto a disk and add it to the 2000 server? Or what is the easiest or best way to do it?
You should have kept your E5.5 server online, added your new E2000 server to the Exchange enterprise, and then migrated the mail from one to the other. Then you could have taken the old server offline. I don't know of any way to move the mailboxes from one server to another if they aren't within the same enterprise.
One thing you could try though is storing all the mail from each E5.5 mailbox in a separate personal store (.pst) and then store those files in the user's home directories and show them how to access them via Outlook, which would be pointed at the new server. Check out the Microsoft BackOffice Resource Kit for some utilities that may help with this.
Bring your old server back online and use Exmerge.exe that is included on the Exchange 2000 CD. It will transfer all of the old mail, contacts, etc. to the new server in either a one or two step process. It can also be done in batch modes.
Thanks, gbaker. I'd completely overlooked that. Exmerge basically dumps to .pst's and migrates the data for you. If your E5.5 server is installed on an NT4 server, you will need the version of Exmerge.exe that comes with the BackOffice Resource Kit, Second Edition.
