Retrieve mail from Exchange 2000 using Outlook with internet mail? 1

I have an exchange 2000 server up and running, and I want to know if there is any way for a laptop that is off-site to retrieve his or her e-mail from the server upon which their mail resides. The server is not a member of a public domain, but it does have a public (routable) IP address. I'm wondering if there's a way for the laptop to specify the IP address of the exchange server as the POP server. If that's possible, I'm not sure how to configure it from the server end.

Exchange sets up POP access as part of the default install of exchange. All you'd need to do is to open the correct ports on your firewall (110) and configure the Outlook client to have Internet access instead of Corporate /Workgroup.

Do the users logging on have to have any special rights?
Their user/pass is getting rejected when trying to log on to POP server.

should need any special access you may need to enter the domain name as part of the username

e.g.

domain\username
password

You will not be able to access calendars or similar if you do it this way though. If they require the full features then you can set up a VPN connection and then use the Corporate/Workgroup outlook configuration.

Thanks ACraib...that was part of it. For some reason I also had to set all of the users passwords to never expire. Once I did that and included the domain in the login, everything worked.

You could also use IMAP (preferred) instead of POP or preferrably with the Outlook/Exchange combination, use the Exchange setting.

You need to give the laptop a host file with the name of the server and the IP address that way Outlook resolves by name to the server.

Download the offline address book and synchronize all folders.

Everytime he dials up, he sychronizes. He gets assigned tasks, calendering, etc...

I forgot, IMAP is Outlook XP and Outlook Express and other mail clients.

I prefer IMAP over POP because of the synchronization issues. I use Linux at home and use IMAP to connect. If there is a Calendar of Task event, I use the webmail.
