Is there a way to retain or use your local profile when joining a 2000 domain. I know that there are workarounds, but it seems to be very difficult to get everything copied from your local profile to the domain profile (especially outlook or outlook express data). If there is not an way of doing this is there any software out there to successfully copy the profiles.

I would recommend using the moveuser utility from Microsoft. You can get it from the Windows 2003 Resource toolkit.
An example of using it would be:

moveuser user1 MIS\user2 /y /c:Computername /k

y= allow overite of existing profile
c= Computer to make changes to
k= specifies if user1 is a local user, so profile is kept

specify domain users in DOMAIN\USER format.
Specify only USER for local accounts.

I transferred a workgroup profile to a domain profile by using this command:
moveuser Kevin kevin.domain /y /C:KevinPC /k

Hi,
You can simply log onto the machine as an admin...
rename the C:\documents and settings\username to c:\documents and settings\old_username.
Then have the user log onto the W2k Domain wait for the profile to build, restart the machine, log on again as administrator, delete the c:\documents and settings\username and rename the c:\documents and settings\old_username to c:\documents and settings\username.
Log out and get the user to log onto the domain again. Hey presto, original profile.
This relies on ensureing that both usernames are the same.
We are using this method not when we are changing users from one doamin to another.
