I am installing 50 new machines into a factory enviroment. I want to stop the average user from using the CD Rom to play music or install games. I have administrator and standard users set up on the machines and each one sits on our LAN. What I would really like is when a standard user logs in that the CD Rom is completely inactive but when myself or one of my colleges log in to have full access to the CD rom. As I am relatively new to IT all help and suggestions are welcome.

Many Thanks............... Gilgamesh [2thumbsup]

I had a similar problem and was given the following tips:

Windows 2000 allows you to deny installation rights to a user therefore blocking them from installing any software. That should take care of unauthorised installations.

If you are using NTFS on the user drives you could simply deny access to the progrma folder of the CD software only giving access to Admins.

You could Disable the Device as admin so when the user logs on the device is disabled. But with this option, you will have to enable it when you log in again as admin and remember to disable it when you log off. I hope this helps.

The Internet Explorer Administration Kit allows you to restrict access to many devices including floppy drives, etc. We use this commonly for public terminals to create a locked down PC in a common area. I know it sounds strange, but the IEAK which builds a custom version of IE should do the job for you. Matt

Which version of the IEAK are you referring too? I'd like to test it. Thanks

You typically can only get the most recent version. But we've been doing customized versions since 4.01. I think that the ability to lock down items came around when 5.x was released, it might have been there before, but desktop integration to IE has been ever increasing. Matt
