I am attempting to rebuild my domain controller. It is the only DC in the forest. The DC has some issues that I believe will only be solved with a rebuild. Is there a way to import/export AD? I wish to do it this way so the DC can keep the same name.

Thanks,

Leo

I would add a second domain controller and transfer all FSMO roles to it and make it a global catalog (move DNS and DHCP as well as other services to it). You are then free to demote your original server while maintaing active directory. After rebuild, and recreating your DC, move the FSMO's and global catalog back. Keep your second DC if you wish or start doing some full backups on a nightly basis.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA

Seaspray0, I do not have another server to use as a DC. I am testing this in a virtual environment. I am planning the rebuild in the summer and would like to have this experience if something should go awry. I would like the DC to have the same name when it is finished. The only way I can forsee that happening is to import/export AD. I could restore the system state to the test environment, but that would cause more issues. I will post this in the VBscript forum too, i think a good script could import/export, I may be wrong about that. Thanks.
