We are trying to restore our sytem from backup tape and all goes well until we get this message.

"hdisk5 residing at (SCSI address) is no longer in the system at that location. This problem needs to be fixed before you can continue the installation."

SO, how do I remove this old non-existent hardrive definition from a machine that will not boot from anything but a tape or floppy?

Can anyone help us...Thanks

Have you got any mirrored disks on the system??
The problem is usually lack of disk space or a mirrored LV that won't fit anywhere.

Put some more disks in the system if you can.

If you have another AIX system you can restore the image.data file to a temporary location and edit the image.data file making the necessary changes. Save the changes and create a signature file and restore them to a formatted floppy. Then with the floppy in the drive do your mksysb restore.

I don't think all that will help but give it a try.

Can you tell us how many disks of which size you copy from and to?? And can you answer my previous question about the mirrored volume??

Changing the disk location won't work. You need to change the info in the image.data file which is used to restore volume groups and mksysb's.

Thanks guys for your advice, the senior admin has decided to reload AIX 4.3 from scratch in hopes that it will start the system on a fresh plate....I will keep you posted
