Hi Forum,

a friend of mine is running a small business where all his
data has been managed by a novell server running veritas backup exec. Now, after the server has crashed, he wanted to change to a windows server and asked me to restore his data. However, I experienced strange effects e.g. the file sizes of restored files are very much different from what veritas tells about them (and also the files are corrupted). Therefore my question(s): Is there any special software one needs to use in order to restore novell backups to windows? Are there any veritas options that have to be set? Is there any explanation for the strange file-sizes?

Thank you very much in advance

Markus

I can restore files backed up from NW to my XP desktop with BE. Maybe the files were compressed when they were backed up? (netware compressed, not tape deck compressed)

Thanks for your answers.

Just one additional question: The article found at
mentions
the error message "Error restoring <filename> Compressed data format is incompatible with the restore target." for
situations where novell compressed volumes shall be restored to windows. However, I do not get any error message. Restoring the data runs without errors and warnings and reports successful completion. Anyhow, some of the restored file are different in size (comparing information given by windows and veritas). It is worth mentioning that some of the restored files are intact (e.g. Word documents).

Is there any explanation for this?

Thanks in advance

Markus

A couple of things:

Were the original backups created with BE for Windows or BE for Netware? I'm not sure the formats are 100% compatible.

Compression on Netware is set up on a per volume basis. Some volumes may be compressed, others not.

Windows is not accurate reporting Netware file sizes. How this relates to files sizes reported by BE I'm not sure.

Unless you have catastrophic physical damage on that Netware server, it can probably be resurrected.
