I am trying to figure out how to restore accidentally deleted messages using BE 8.6 and E2k. The restore works fine. However, no matter which option I choose, it duplicates the messages that are already there.

Choosing replace if newer, replace period or overwrite all gives the same end result. If the message it not there, I get it. If it is already there it duplicates it?

that is normal, the restore will never overwrite any email messages.

your best best, turn on deleted item retention - set it for say 30 days, so if this happens again, you won't need to restore.

It looks like i do have this setup. What happened was Symantec overcleaned and took out some good mail. I do have my retention set at 30 days but have never tried to restore from that method. I have always gone back to Veritas and restored the mail.

I am trying to search now and find out how to restore via the method you are mentioning but have no luck thus far.

this is all going to depend on how Symantec overcleaned the email messages.

1. If it hard deleted the email messages, then you aren't going to have much luck - a hard delete can be done in Outlook by Shift-Del on the messages, it doesn't go in the deleted items folder, they just get deleted.
hard deleting from the Deleted Items folder also has the same effect.
or
2. If it was nice and only deleted the messages - open Outlook of the affected mailbox - go to Tools, Recover Deleted Items - it will then bring up a screen showing all the email which can be recovered.
Pick what you want and recover it, it will put it back in the deleted items folder.

I have often had a similar problem (usually caused by the user saying 'I don't know what's missing - just get it all back'). I do the restore, I get all the duplicates, then I run a utility from that de-dupes messages (about 20 dollars). It rocks (although its Contacts/Tasks/Calendar/etc. version is not so hot. In fact, it just plain doesn't work on my public folder Contacts). And before a moderator dings this reply, my only relationship with this company is as a happy customer.
