I had a windows xp comp that was connected to a windows 2000 domain. the user using the computer had a domain account. we deactivated the domain and removed the server, however when he trys to log into his computer with the old username, it doesnt let him, he can only log in as admin. However you can still find his old username in the documents and settings. Is there any way to make this active again?

Since this computer is no longer on the domain the local computer does not have a username which corresponds to this user.

When he was on the domain a profile was created on this machine.

Admin (Probably Administrator) is probably the only account which resides on this machine.

Right Click - My Computer and select Manage.

Computer Management (Local) - System Tools - Local Users And Groups - Users

Will show which users accounts are locally on this machine.

Depending on the permissions set in the registry of the profile you may not be able to use all of the profile. Certainly you show be able to copy stuff like Desktop icons, Start Menu, Favorites, and My Documents if they were stored locally on the computer.

I agree with Technician, but another route you can try if the profile settings are critical is try creating a local account on the computer and have the user login then log out to create a new profile. Login as admin and use the moveuser.exe from the windows 2000 resource kit to move the profile from the domain account profile to the local account profile version. Below is a link for proper syntax using the moveuser executable.
