I want to restrict directory access to ceratin users.

I have tried using .htaccess .htpasswd but IIS appears to ignore this I can use windows autentication but I want to use a 'flat file system

Use NT file permissions. Create some local users (User Manager) Give them access to folders with Explorer (right click folder, select security) and then turn off anonymous access and select Basic Authentication instead.

Thanks, but as I said, I want to use a flat file method as I want to be able to add/remove users by script (i.e. php) and not through user manager.

PHP I don't know, but I'm almost certain that there are Perl modules that enable you to create users, groups, etc. So you can add/remove users using either CGI (with Perl) or ASP (with PerlScript on the server). I'll have a look in CPAN...

sorry - CPAN = "Comprehensive Perl Archive Network" (I think that's what it stands or!) It's an massive archive of Perl modules. If you want to do something you can bet someone's already done it before and the chances are that if it's been don ein Perl it'll be on CPAN.

Is there a way to make iis use .htaccess .htpasswd or an equivilient

Not that I know of. You could try to write something that simulates it, but I doubt that it would be as secure as using Windows authentication....
