Resources always going low

I'm on my computer for about two hours using the web and using a text editor. Then I get lots of problems because resources are low. I close some windows and the resources seem to be lost forever. How do I free resources do other people have/had this problem?

Sounds like a ram problem. Check out the FAQ's. There's one concerning just this, explaining how to lean out your system plus a script for freeing up ram. (Amongst other issues.) My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

In general:
The things that make the computer slow are the many unneccessary items that automatically startup when Windows starts.

Right-click on the icons in the tray area, open each, go through the options to turn off the "tray" or "run at startup" feature.

For the others, go to Start>Run, type msconfig. Leave systray, scan registry, Load Power Profile (both), your virus scanner and firewall if you have one.

Go to Start>Run, type sysedit. Look over the autoexec.bat for unneccessary lines, click the win.ini and check for programs loading here:

Open Explorer and navigate to c:\windows\temp and delete all files here. Empty the Recycle Bin.

Close all tray applications and hit Alt_Ctl_Del and end task on all items except for explorer and systray, disable your screensaver, then run scandisk and defrag.

If you don't know what an entry is or what it does, post back.

If you use Office, kill the Find Fast indexer. Need instructions, post back.

I don't know what an entry is. Do I need to know you haven't mentioned it anywhere else in your post.

I think what reghakr means is if there is a line in msconfig under the startup tab whose purpose is unknown, post it back and he may be able to tell if you need it or not. ( Are the power profiles really needed if you don't use power saving features? I disable mine as well as system tray - shaves a couple of secomds off the boot time!) yes, this is standard with windows, your resources will disappear over time.

this is not just ram, but also graphics,hardware, etc.

the fix given above is also standard, i too disable power profiles too.

you will still lose resources over time, but i hope not as fast.

hotfusion is right, that's what I meant.

If you open msconfig to the startup tab and there is an entry named ( for example) MachineDebugManager, some users don't know what this is or does. I can probably explain the entries you have if you don't know what they are.

hotfusion, I understand what you mean about the Power profiles. If there is only one user on the computer, then it might be OK to have just one (or none). I'm not confident enough to recommend that to everryone. The systray entry is mainly for laptops and the only thing affected (if you are not using Power Profules, is the yellow speaker icon will not show up in the tray.

There's a Microsoft Knowledge Base article regarding Power Profiles:

In Internet Explorer, go to Help>Online Support, choose the Microsoft Knowledge Base, then check the box that says specify an article ID number, then paste Q187611 into the search box. I'ts titled "LoadPowerProfile Starts Twice When You Start Your Computer"
