replication error checking

Can anyone help me , I have DB(a) replicating to DB(b). Every now and again for unknown reasons the link is broken.What I want to do is to write some sort of error checking script to mail me a message to say the replication is not working ...?
Im using oracle 9i on a unix environment

Any ideas much appreciated , i dont know where to start
