Hi All,

I want to be sure that I'm going about this correctly. Current Win2000 Domain Controller (OldServ) will soon be replaced by a newer Win2000 Domain Controller (NewServ). I installed Win2000 on NewServ but did not join a domain, while I install all the software it needs. It has a different computer name and a different IP address than OldServ.

Here's what I need to do next:
* Have both of them on the network as Domain Controllers, so the User accounts, etc. will replicate to NewServ.
* Copy user files, databases, etc. to NewServ
* Remove OldServ completely from network.

My questions:
(1) If I run DCPROMO on NewServ, will it install Active Directory?
(2) Do I need to join NewServ to the existing domain before running DCPROMO?
(3) Once I'm finished with OldServ, how do I take it off the network cleanly?
(4) NewServ was purchased with no operating system. I had to install Win2000 with OldServ's CD. Will Win2000 know that there's another server on the network with same serial number?

Thanks in advance for any help ...

1 - Yes
2 - No, you have the option of choosing the domain.
3 - Use DCPromo.exe to demote the domain controller.
4 - Nope, windows 2000 could have hundreds of servers using the same serial, and will never know.
