The company that I work for has purchased a new server to replace a current Exchange 2000 Server. We are replacing this server because it has failed twice in the past.
The server that is currently in place is named Exchange (original huh?). It is a DC and is handling DHCP.
We would like to replace the failing server Exchange, with the new, replacement server.
Our environment is as follows:
All servers are running Windows 2000 Server.
We have a total of three current servers. The new server will be replacing one of these.
We have two DC’s and one member server.
DC1 is handling DNS and WINS.
DC2 (our failing exchange server) is handling Exchange, OWA, and DHCP.
Member server is handling our database.
I have read that for security and recovery purposes, Exchange 2000 should be set up on a member server and not a DC. So I am planning on setting the new replacement server up as a member server.
What will I need to do, to allow my to add the new replacement server to the domain as a member server, get Exchange 2000 setup on it, transfer email from old server to new server, and then get the old server off the network?
My thoughts are as follows. Install Windows 2000 Server on the new server. Join it to the domain. Install Exchange 2000 Server on the new server (Domain and forest prep were run when installing the original server so they can be skipped this installation).
Am I going to be able to transfer the mail from the old server to the new server with this setup? Is there an easy way to do it?
