I currently have w2000 Advanced Server installed on my C: partition (4GB). All of my applications etc are on the D: partition. I would like to install W2000 Professional and get rid of the Advanced Server. Does anyone know if I will have problems with my D: drive? Specifically, with the permissions etc. Will the same permissions transfer over to 2000 Professional or will I need to reinstall the D: partition too? I have alot of stuff on there that I want to keep and am trying to get away from backing everything up to CD. Any other tips or help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
yowza

Hi,

You will probably have to reinstall the applications because they will need registry keys, DLLs registered and installed and other support files once you have 2K Pro installed.
Assuming both partitions use NTFS format disks, you will need to login as administrator and retake ownership of the appropriate folders as the SIDs will be different. There won't be a problem though if they are FAT32 format.

I must also strongly recommend that you do back up any data that you want before going ahead, because accidents do happen even to the best of us. You could get away with backing it up, but ask yourself what would the consequences would be if you suddenly lost all the data stored there?
It's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks John! Yes, both partitions are NTFS. That is why I was concerned about being able to access the D partition after installing w2000 Prof. I'm not worried about reinstalling the applications, but I have tons of data that I didn't want to lose.
