i have a single server running wins
it is on nt4 and it used by many remote sites
ie lots of remote sites have the address of the box distributed by their dhcp

what is the best way to migrate this

is the best way possibly just turn it off and pop a new box in with the same address and let everything rereg or ?

Well, cutting over to a new server wouldn't be that hard since you are using DHCP to distribute the address, but to have the smoothest transition, you could actually move the WINS database to another machine. I assume you aren't going to be running NT on the new box.

Doing it the way you described makes a lot of assumptions about the contents of the database that might not be true. Many WINS servers have static entries that won't be automatically recreated.

Here's an article describing the migration process. It's not really very difficult:

Stop the WINS service on both servers. Copy a folder over. Verify existence of a .dll on the new server. Start the service on the new server. Run a database consistency scan from the GUI on the new server. That's it.
