Currently have 98se and 2000pro on dual boot with 2 hard drives one for each. I would like to do a nice clean install of XPpro on drive D replacing 2000. What is the best way? I have Partition Magic 7.0 pro.
The format will clear everything out of the 2000 install. That said, the boot loading files will be left on the drive with 98se, you may have to remove an entry from the Boot.ini file relating to 2000 as a boot startup option.
HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP (Q289022)
Loads of stuff to read and digest, hows this for an overview.. Reformat drive D (that contains existing 2000). I just loaded Partition Magic on win 98 (drive C) and I can select drive D and format NTFS with couple of clicks. Can I then run the XP setup from the 98side of things and during install be given the choice of where I want it installed ie D drive? Trying to keep it real simple as first time installing OS.
You shouldn't need to bother with Partition Magic to just nuke a drive and install another OS.
Boot from your XP cd. Do a clean install, just be careful to select the right drive, and you should be fine. MCSE, A+
Do exactly what linny and Xemus said to keep it simple and forget about Win98 and partition magic.
After you are up and running on XP and connected to the internet run windows update and install SP1 and all of the rest of the upgrades that you need.
Then you can start tweaking XP to your needs. You will soon forget about Win98 Please let us know if the advice we give is of some help.
Feedback will benefit all
