All, I have read through the white paper on domain renaming in Windows 2003 server. Our active directory domain name is ok, I simply want to rename the netbios name only. Is the procedure the same? Any shortcuts? When I go to edit the xml file, do I simply leave the domain name alone and only edit the netbios name?

I am planning on testing this in the lab but thought I would ask for tips from anyone whos done it first.

thanks.

That is correct. Since you have read the white paper I won't go into all the <start robot voice>WARNING WARNING WILL ROBINSON, DANGER DANGER stuff.</end robot voice>

Good that you are going to test this out in a lab.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

great, thanks. I'll post back if there is anything significant in my lab trial.

Everything with the rename went fine in the lab. One hitch I'm not sure how to get around.

The document makes reference to users who are never on your lan and only connect via vpn. Basically, you have to disjoin them from the domain and than re-join them.

I have gone through this process. I log into the laptop as a local admin, connect to the vpn, disjoin from the domain, reboot, log back in as local admin, rejoin the domain.

All that is no problem. The problem is that the user account can no longer log in. The user account has lost it's cached credentials and I cannot get to the users desktop now. Any suggestions?
