Renaming H/D Partitions

After a re-format of the C: drive and re-installation of W2K Pro on the C: partition of my h/d which had previously been divided into partitions C,E,F & G , with D being an un-partitioned 2nd h/d , the resulting partitions were C,D,E,F on Master h/d and the Slave drive now was named G.

Before I found out that the correct way to return the partitions to their previous arrangements was to use Computer Management and its appropriate sub-menus , I attempted merely to re-name these drives by highlighting them in Window Explorer.

Although I now have the drives back to their previous arrangement by means of the " Computer Management " route with all paths also in sync with the relevant partitions , my previous efforts at re-naming have left partition D and E with the following labels :-

"Local Disk (D:)(D:)" &
"Local Disk (E:)(E:)"

I've tried opening Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Logical Drives where I find the D: and E: drives named correctly but am unable to change the description of these drives as shown above in Windows Explorer.

This problem is merely an annoyance and doesn't seem to affect the access of any Applications within these partitions but it is irritating me somewhat everytime I look at them !

I've tried highlighting these names again in Windows Explorer and attempted to rename them back to merely :- "Local Disk (D:)" "Local Disk (E:)" but this has no effect either.

Can anyone tell me how to get them back to these names, please ?

Local Disk (D:) where D is the drive letter appears when there is no label applied to the partition. Have you tried just applying no label?

Start, Run..., cmd, label D: may help too.

Take a look at the label command. It is used to rename your volumns. At a command prompt type: label /? to get help.

Thanks for the reply Freestone . Actually I seem to have got it sorted out now - I've been involved with other operations on the PC since my original post and , after several re-boots , I remembered the problem again and , when I looked at the partitions later I noticed that they had reverted to normal names and the problem had gone.

Sorry I can't be more specific as to what I did to cure it but I remember trying your suggestion of applying no label so I'm assuming that was what cured it after one of the re-boots - not exactly a helpful reply for anyone with the same problem but , perhaps , applying no label is the answer
