When I installed my 03 server, apparently I installed it with the application server option enabled and that is not what I wanted (I'm not an admin type, so sorry if I mis speak). So, now my temp TS access has expired the only way I can access my server is to use the mstsc.../console option and frankly that not what I want to use. SO, when I go to switch to the admin mode that allows the two admin RDP sessions (the intended way of setup) I get a message advising, "This option removes Terminal Server from your computer. Programs that you installed while Terminal Server was installed will no longer work and will have to be reinstalled." EVERYTHING??? Seriously. I guess I'm hoping that someone will tell me that this is MS just warning me that it might happen, but in fact it never does...please tell me that's the case.

MicahDB,

Do you have a background with Windows 2000? Windows 2003 is a little different for the administration component. All you need to do is follow the following to allow RDP access the server:

If this is all you require (Administration only), uninstall the Terminal Server (Application Mode) in Add/Remove windows components.

Good luck

I do have a little experience and yes, that option is alreay checked. I do know (through reading) that when the 03 server is installed in application mode that you need to install a TS-CAL (or something) basically a terminal server license, which doesn't sound free, to RDP to the box once the 'free rdp session period' ends. I want to 'uninstall' the terminal server piece of the windows components in the add/remove programs area. It clearly states that if I uninstall this the only RDP sessions that I will have are the two concurrent admin connections and that's exactly the mode that I want to run in, however it also says switching to that mode will more or less uninstall all of my software. Any thoughts? Anyone?

Well, the administration mode isn't design to be used for running every day apps (like Office). It's designed to be used to perform server administration, and nothing else.

And, you are right, TS CALs are not free.

If you have installed Terminal Services in Application Mode, you will also need to install a TS License server. To do this, i is a built in component of Windows 2003 server (Add / Remove Windows components - The tick box about TS application mode).

Now, this doesn't need to be on the same server as the Terminal Server (and should not be). There just need to be one instance of TS licensing withing the Domain or Forest.

When you install the TS licensing option i always install this on a Domain Controller. You will have the option for a domain or Enterprise install. Always install Enterprise.

Once you do install this, you will need to activate the TS license server. This is done by right clicking the server in the License explorer in the left had side and select 'Activate'. This should get you to the point where you can run for 3 months. After this, you will need TS CALs (Client Access Licenses) of access will not be possible.

A few things to think about.

Good Luck

Also, for the 3 months thing, if you delete a registry key on your client machines, it will free up that machine to get a full-time license or another 90 day license. Here is the key to delete if you install licenses but still get a temp one:

HKLM > Software > Microsoft > MSLicensing

Thanks all for the input. I went into the add/remove windows comp, unchecked the terminal server and got the warning about the programs as I stated in my earlier post. I found out through asking a server admin at my office, that is refering specifically to programs or apps that were installed while signed in as a TS user. If the programs/apps (by apps I mean VSS, Adobe Design Suite, etc) were installed from the console, then there is no problem going from Terminal Server mode to Admin mode.

Thanks for all the posts.

Micah.
