In MS Word, typing ---- and enter results in a nice thin black horizontal line.

When these lines are between text, removing them is no simple matter. Selecting the horizontal line (or surrounding blocks of text) and deleting does not remove the line.

In many cases, the more one tries to delete these lines, the more they multiply!!

How do I get rid of them?

Try Format > Borders & Shading -- NONE

Thanks for answering but that's not for the same type of line.

Did you try it?

I inserted some random ---[enter] lines throughtout a doc.

Then I selected the entire doc and removed all the inserted lines as outlined above.

Select the paragraph above the offending line, [!]then[/!] Format > Borders & Shading -- NONE.

FYI: [Ctrl]+[Q] is the keyboard shortcut to reset the paragraph formatting to default.

For future reference, if you want to have "---" in your document, then just Undo ([Ctrl]+[Z]) after typing in ---. That will undo Word's action of changing the dashes into that line, but leave the dashes in place.

I used CNTRL + Q. It moves the line to the top of the selected area.

However, it appears to works when I Select All. Shame I now have to reformat 23 pages.

To disable these border lines use:

Tools > AutoCorrect Options

Select tab: AutoFormat As You Type

Deselect: Border lines

There are other irritating options in here that some readers might want to disable!
