okay. it has been 9 months since the migration from 5.5 to 2k3. It has been 7 months since I turned off the Exchange services on the 5.5 box and there has been no problems with the exception of the "X.400 not communictating" event log.

I want to remove this 5.5 box from my network and I know that I just can't unplug it and all is good. THAT would be too easy.

Could anyone here link me or tell me a step by step procedure to properly removing an exchange 5.5 server from the network?

Thank you,

Dan

well, I read that by not removing the Exchange 5.5 server from the network in the proper manner will leave a "ghost" image of that server on your ESM/Network.

Not true?

I wish I can recall what was done with our 5.5 when it took a shit.It wasn't that hard to do, but since yours is working mind as well do it the right way.

say Mark, I've got an issue.

On step 17, when I go to the ESM and attempt to perform that step I'm unable to get a "Delete" option.

Steps 1 -16 have been completed successfully.

any thoughts?

Dan

Did you connect to another server first?

Note You cannot delete an Exchange Server 5.5 computer if you are connected to it with the Exchange Administrator program. [red]Use Connect to Server to connect to a different Exchange Server computer first[/red]. Also, Exchange Administrator will not allow you to delete the server if Exchange services are still running on it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

yeah, I did. From the 5.5 box and stopped all the services then started the Exchange admin. True to nature, it asked me where I wanted to connect to and I choose the new 2k3 server. didn't say that I needed to restart the 5.5 services and I was wondering how I can remove a server from the ESM if that 5.5 servies are stopped. <shrug>.

To complete step 17 I went back to my 2k3 server and followed the steps.

OK, so sounds like you figured it out that you need to do it from the new Exchange Server and not the Exchange 5.5 server.

Te reason is because you need to have local access to the Exchange services (which have to be running) and since they are stopped ont he 5.5 server you need to perform this action from another server.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
