Hello All,

I have AIM installed on my computer. I am running Windows 98. I want to stop AIM from starting at system startup time. I remove it from my startup,(un-check it startup),yet the next time I re-boot my system, AIM starts up again. I do not want to remove it from my system,as my kids use it.

First go to
Start>Run MSCONFIG
Startup Tab
Find the AIM reference and "uncheck" it
Restart

If it does the trick and it "doesn't" load at startup and your kids can still run it..try it out to make sure for a while.
Then you can go to this REG key and delete that value/reference in the Right Pane
Start>Run REGEDIT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If Everything is still in order......go back to MSCONFIG
Start>Run MSCONFIG
and select "Normal" Startup from the General Tab
Restart

I have tried this, and after my kids restart aim, it installs itself back in the startup. (I uncheck it, and then it re-checks itself). Is there away to delete aim from the startup, and yet keep it on the system.

I don't use AIM or AOL, so not sure.(long time ago, i did...4.0)
Right click the stupid Tray Icon and see if there's an option to "Instant messenger"...'Don't load at startup'
What's the file name in Msconfig?
Find it on your HDD and Rename the extension... to .old

Delete the startup file (if there) in
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp and/or
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\<username>\Programs\StartUp

Inside your AOL "Preferences" there may be a setting to "not load" on startup
Try AOL Keyword PASSWORD LIST and see if there's an option about IM...

See, the thing I'm unsure of, is if this "startup" file (for example, if the file name is AIMSTART.EXE) is "necessary" for "functionality" OR just a "startup" file ....usually it's the latter.

Review the settings or "preferences" section first...
Try to Rename the extension like I said..
thirdly try;
Delete the REG keys at
Start>Run REGEDIT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the "Run Services" section under both HKLM and HKCU also....review all the Run keys for that matter..

Start>Run MSinfo32
LeftPane..."Software Environment"
-Running Tasks
-Startup Programs
-System Hooks
will tell you where to find that Startup File..

If I had it running on my machine, I could tell you "exactly" how to kill it.....I don't, for good reason.
R your kids having to "Re-install" AIM or just starting AIM creates a new startup file..(the point is , that if they keep "re-installing" the proggie, then ofcourse it's going to keep re-appearing in startup..

Q: How do I stop AIM from starting automatically when I start my computer?

A: Select the My AIM menu, click Options, and click Edit Preferences. Click the General tab, and uncheck Start AIM when Windows starts.
