I have a couple of programs in my startup list which need to be removed (not just disabled).
I have had advice that I could run MSCONFIG.exe to get to the list but this does NOT allow the deletion of the offending programs.
Am I stuck with a boot message forever asking me if I really want to disable these programs at start up .(how unprofessional).

One of the programs is MSBLAST.exe.

It would be great to be able to delete this .......

Thanks GG

I'm assuming that you've already found MSBLAST.exe on your hard-drive and tried to delete it. If you can boot up windows, and if you can't delete a file because it's in use, press ctrl-alt-del and kill the "explorer.exe" process. Then press new task, type in "cmd". Now in theory you should be able to delete the file using the terminal. On MSCONFIG it shows the path's of the programs that start up. You could delete them in this fashion, or maybe I just misunderstood the entire question. Let me know.

The problem is not how to delete the offending program - Yes, I have deleted MSBLAST.exe.

The problem is HOW TO CHANGE THE STARTUP LIST

The program is STILL ON THE LIST.
You can delete what you want out of your computer but it DOES NOT CHANGE THE MSCONFIG LIST - heh??

YES, I DON'T BELIEVE IT EITHER.

I am not interested in deleting programs from my computer - this I know how to do.

HOW DO YOU DELETE AN ENTRY FROM THE LIST SHOWN IN MSCONFIG ??

Thanks for your interest

I as a freeware program called Aspy32. It is easily found through a Google search for "Aspy32.zip"

Highlight the entry you want to remove and right-click, Delete.

Then do a File, Save sequence to rewrite the registry entry involved. This removes the startup entry.

Most programs can be removed through Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.

For others, such as msblast, let your antivirus software remove them.

"Am I stuck with a boot message forever asking me if I really want to disable these programs at start up .(how unprofessional)."

You should have a check box on this screen to disable the "Selective Start Up" warning from MsConfig.

As it has been mentioned, any Registry Cleaner will most likely have options for removing these entries from the Start Up list.

Many thanks guys - I greatly appreciate your quick help and interest !

Problem solved !

Along these lines, in previos windows version's, well I don't know about 2000/ME, but in 98, you could just simply go to Regedit, then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Run and delete it from there, and hey presto, never runs again! But in XP, it appears only some of the startup items are present, but maybe it would have been the same in 98. Also, the folder Run- is not present in the registry for XP, which in 98 contained all the keys for the startup items that you had excluded from the normal startup procedure. Does anyone know where these excluded keys go?
Also, before interfering with the registry, if a startup item doesn't have an option to turn it off, then it may be present in start/all programs/startup, from which you can delete it and it simply wont run at startup anymore.
Just a couple of last miute topics there!

Where the excluded keys go (when you uncheck the box in MSCONFIG) is :

hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupfolder

or one of the startup folders under msconfig

Thats how I finally deleted the blasted msblast off my msconfig list!

PS I found this by running regedit then running find looking for msblast.

Thanks for all your help guys
