I am running XP SP2 with all the patches and have a problem with the security policy blocking the running of ActiveX on the computer. What do I need to set/reset to allow activex to run? I've tried to change the settings in IE as recommended elsewhere but this seems to be a system security policy. I need help. Please.

What other anti-virus or other "protection" software are you running?

I have ZoneAlarm and CA Security Center on the computer but this happens even if these are turned off.

Is this computer part of a domain?

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

No, it's a home computer on a workgroup.

Check the security settings in IE. IE7 disables activex conrtols but if you customize the settings you should be able to get prompts to activate them.

The settings in IE are set to either enable activex or prompt for it. Also even though I have microsoft in the trusted zone I still get the info bar message. I'm pretty sure the problem is not with IE directly.

You mention Microsoft and Trusted Sites, can we assume you are trying to download something from Microsoft and get some sort of security warning about ActiveX?

Can you clarify this and also supply the exact warning message. Are you using an Administrator or Limited User?

Is there any settings in your ZoneAlarm that you can add any Microsoft site to, disabling a firewall may not stop it blocking sites. You could try Safe Mode with Networking and see if you still get any warning.

security settings blocking activex

Your current settings prohibit running active-X controls on this page

linney, the info bar message is
"Your security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for options..."
The only option is "more information" which tells me about the info bar.
This is not restricted to microsoft but when I try to update flash or shockwave (or any site that uses activex to install it's software)
One of the links you included was an old one of mine and nothing I tried worked.

Still looking for an answer, like I said it seems to be a policy setting on the computer, not in IE.

I still come back to this "Is there any settings in your ZoneAlarm that you can add any Microsoft site to, disabling a firewall may not stop it blocking sites. You could try Safe Mode with Networking and see if you still get any warning". Eliminating the firewall (or any other security programs) as the cause should be tried. You can try Safe Mode with Networking which might eliminate the firewall, but really you may have to uninstall the ZoneAlarm firewall (use SP2 firewall temporarily) to be sure of eliminating it as a cause. Even when you disable a firewall the protective settings it has in place in the Registry remain active and can cause blocking actions that is why uninstalling is necessary.

The only policy that I can think of that may control ActiveX would be found at the Security Features Location: User Configuration\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Security Features.

What happens if you turn off the warning message?

Turn off the Information Bar for ActiveX controls

This procedure will allow Web sites to automatically prompt you when downloading software, bypassing the Information Bar.

Open Internet Explorer.

Click Tools on the menu bar.

Click Internet Options...
The Internet Options window appears.

Click the Security tab.

Click the Custom Level... button.
The Security Settings window appears.

Locate ActiveX controls and plug-ins in the Settings: list.

Click to select Enable under Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls.

Click the OK button.
A Warning! message appears.

Click the Yes button to change the security settings for the zone.

Click the OK button.

You will now receive prompts directly from a Web site if it needs to download software to your computer.

OK, I haven't removed ZA yet but I went to the security settings and turned automatic prompting on (enabled) At the bottom of this box is a circle with a blue ! and "Some settings are managed by your system administrator" in a yellow background. This did not change the behavior. Sorry.
