We need to replace one of our existing servers, the old server was one of two "Active Directory Integrated" DNS Servers.
The new server has been installed and DNS has been set up.
What is the best way to remove the old DNS Server, Is it to just uninstall DNS, or should I just use DCPromo to demote the server from Active Directory, if so will this remove DNS?

Thanks

If you run DCPROMO, this will remove the DC as an authoritive DNS server within the domian. It will not however remove the DNS softeware from the server...

Remove the DNS service via Add/Remove Programs - this will permanently remove it from the system. Just be sure none of your clients are pointing to it :)

I'm trying to demote a 2K Server DC. I'm going to rebuild the server with a new RAID and will put on 2K3 instead of 2K Server. But when I run dcpromo I get the error "The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure". There no data that I need on it.

any hints?
thanks.

If you aren't worried about cleanly demoting it, you can run dcpromo /forceremoval. This is remove AD without replicating.

You will need to do a metadata cleanup on one of your remaining DCs to remove all traces of the server you forcefully demote.

thanks, mlichstein.
do you have a link or a site that explains how to go through a metadata cleanup?
