How do I remove certain programs from the startup folder? I went to msconfig.exe and selectively tried to remove Yahoo messenger from starting up at logon, because I have downloaded Trillian, and want that to be the only instant messenger program to load at startup. I also went to the preferences menu within Yahoo Messenger and tried to unselect it from starting at startup, but that also didn't work. Is there something in the registry I have to adjust? Any other Ideas? Thanks in advance.

I suggest you go back to Msconfig, now im guessing you went to the "startup" tab... this time go to the "services" tab... try that.

If not, uninstall the software, re-install and select in the options "dont load on startup"...

There is a way to change startup setting in regedit... i will find out for you.. i've forgotten

but try that first.

Try Crap Cleaner (
It will clean up your registry, let you uninstall programs (even ones that aren't listed in your add/remove programs), and delete things from startup easily.

Just my 2¢

Thanks a lot to both of you. I took both of your advices and it seems to have done the trick. I went to the "services" tab and also downloaded CCleaner. Thanks so much!
