Hi,

I have installed SP2 for WinXP. I like it and it works fine for me. I know SP2 has made an archive just in case of uninstall. In dir C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles is 500 MB of data. I am not intenting to uninstall SP2, I would just like to remove archive files. I would like to do this because my system is backuped ones per week and 500 MB of data is unnecesary stored in backup image.

Is there any way to remove archive files from SP2 for WinXP.

There was one excellent option in win2000 service pack: at the time of installation: don't archive!!! Why was this options removed from winxp sp2?

Thanks,
Grofaty

The reason for the removal of the option in SP2 for XP was IMO 2 fold. 1) It was such a major update to the operating system that not enabling this feature would have been foolhardy, there have been hundreds of people with problems. Thanks to this forced option they were able to get their system back to normal. 2) Generally Win2K would have been updated by Systems Admins, XP in the whole would be updated by home users.

You can safely just delete the folder and suffer no side effects in normal use. The only time these files would be called upon is if you run a SFC /Scannow (or any other /option) or during some software installation.

My personal opinion on this is if you have the space keep it, if not don't worry and delete it.
