Remote users access question

We use a thrid party product for our sales reps etc. to connect into our network from the internet. I need them to be able to access there home and share drives etc. i was thinking of setting up ftp but not sure if that's the best solution. I was also thinking about a remote desktop server but the problem is, these users may want to download there files, make changes and then upload them back to the servers. I could put office on the remote server then they could run everything direct from the server but they cannot get copies of there files. Terminal server??? I ran this is win 2000 and was not very happy. printing was a pain to setup.

any help and/or advice would be appreciated

i am assuming they are using laptops joined to an AD domain and logging on using cached domain credentials

I second the suggestion for a VPN connection. You can use Routing and Remote Access in W2K3 Server to configure the server end.

Done right it will provide a secure and cost effective means to provide access.

You can do everything through Terminal Services, including mapping local resources (copy files from local machine to TS box and vise-versa). Yes, printers can be a pain. Reason being is that vendors write crappy drivers. If you stick with HP, you should be safe for the most part. Most anything you buy off the shelf at Target will not be friendly with Terminal Services. You'll need to do print mapping in that case.

VPN's are terrible for running applications that require back-end database. You could, however, use a VPN solution along with Terminal Services (but why). Just use SSL.

thats true, use of MS office could be slow. I took it more as a copy/paste type function that may be performed

hp 8000-8100 series problem exists in print mapping or redirection..problem with the MS general drivers and HPs or something along those lines...may even be corrected nowadays

I used TS with 2000 and those copy file features etc were not in that version of the OS. when 2003 first came out I was looking into TS on a 2003 box and did notice those features but there were lots of bugs. I perfer to go with the TS or remote desktop connection. but I will need another box for this since I will have to load office. the last thing I want my users to do is double click an excel file over a vpn connection.
