Howdy all, running Win 2K Pro, and like a classic fool I was messing around with Services and somehow disabled the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service.

Now, I can't get it to run again. In fact, I can't even get the Services page to display a property page any more, so I'm effectively shut out of the Services module. Some of my startup apps are unhappy with me as well.

I fooled around with a few other things, but I'm fairly certain this is the one that's causing the problem. I tried using Safe Mode, or MSCONFIG to boot again, but no matter how I boot, it's still disabled.

Am I looking at a reinstall?? Is there any other way to "undisable" this service??

Thanks,

Steve

This is going to win an unhelpfulness award I think, but it might point you in a helpful direction.
There is a DOS command that can start and stop services, therefore bypassing the need to go to the control panel. Unfortunately, can I remember what it is, can I heck as like. Sorry about that, if I remember it, I'll let you know.

Hello StevenB,

A quick way to repair the registry entry by importing a .reg file.
Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs]
"Start"=dword:00000002

Silly question. In order to use the reg file tsuji posted, I just take that text, save it in a text file with a .reg extension, and import it using REGEDIT? Right?

Thanks!

Steve

StevenB,

The .reg serves different purposes due to the precision of the info it contains:
[1] An invitation to you to look into the registry value name and its value.
[2] If it's different, take note why different.
[3] If you are satified yourself that it might help, do it manually and automatically.

This registry entry solved the problem perfectly. Many thanks to all of you for your help!
