remote file or site get or download in http like frontpage

In FrontPage in the past, I would often *import* entire sites usually in order to study them or possibly quickly adapt the structure to my own new site idea.

It seems surprising that this is seemingly totally undocumented in DreamWeaver - unless it is really not supported?!

The FTP remote download feature in DW seems to require a password to the site's server.

Is anyone familar with how this is typically done in DW either as a supported feature or a work-around?

Are there any FREEware programs for this (download.com has some shareware, but DW totally broke my budget, and now all the more I'd like to have the satisfaction of having this solved without shelling out ANYthing!)

I'm trying to sell FrontPage so keeping that is not a real option (does it change the code from imported site files anyway before they would reach DreamWeaver after going through an Import and a Save?)

I can't think of an ftp program that would allow you access to files on a server that DIDN'T require a password!! How did you manage this with frontpage???

You can, of course, import your own sites and there's nothing stopping you cutting and pasting code (though obviously they'll be gaps where images etc should be)

Can't help thinking that I've misunderstood the question/problem here! lol

Yes, absolutely IMPORT any file or entire site you want in FrontPage (I believe this was supported back with FP97, but certainly by FP2000 since that is what I've used.)

You simply hit the Import option in the Files menu, specify a file name for the new web on your local drive; then point FP to the site to download and presto, a lot of saved work and/or get under the hood the easy way just to look.

How else do all of you get enough info to get estimates for revamp work - just from the View Source? ask for prospective client site CDs in the mail? get passwords from PROSPECTIVE clients [yea, right!]? Hope you hit it lucky with the amount?

I have never used FP but I would bet any money you like that any import function will only import the generated html and images from a site not a copy of the files.

Any one care to wager??

I don't think FP had a problem downloading script files as well as html and images. Of course, server side scripts cannot run even if they've been copied, but the primary purpose of my inquiry, was regarding site files as they pertain to structure.

My hunch is that DW does not build in a function like this since it is now available by multiple vendors as a separate product and not universally used. However, utilities like site copying are used by many, and it is surprising that there isn't more of an interest in this on these forums.

I guess you're just letting off steam because this answer is not that helpful as you probably know. Even a crack programmer or developer shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel!

A utility like this has a lot of legitimate uses as I implied before, such as assessing a prospective client's site in matters such as structure, image file sizes, etc. all at one time. It would be a real time-saver. Too bad MM didn't include it, but thankfully there are others editions around.

I stand by my statement. You will see client side script. You will not be able to download serverside script. only the generated pages.

ServerSide things...will stay on ....well

it is possible to extract some SSI scripts....but no guaratees that those script will be broken and unfunctional on some other serverX.....they can be also incripted...imported from folders that have no "public" rights....so in other words SSI are lot of trouble..I would rather spend time learning to design them then debug some questionable script for sitex.com
