Can I connect to my Win2k machine from my XP pro over my home lan with remote desktop or is it only the other way around?

Hi
The quick answer is no, you can't connect using remote desktop from XP to 2K as the Remote desktop protocol host is only on XP. However you could use VNC as a freeware alternative on both.

There is client software on the XP cd for all versions of Windows. Once installed, the remote must have an account on the XP machine to connect to and that account must be allowed to use remote desktop.

Go to CONTROL PANEL | SYSTEM and select the REMOTE tab. Be sure Remote Desktop is enabled. Then click on SELECT REMOTE USERS and add the approriate user account(s).

but futuretech204 - you can only connect to an XP machine from a non-XP machine - it doesn't work the other way round.

Hey, Just a warning. If you use VNC, the chances of your network being hacked skyrocket, because, instead of having to breach a firewall, they just have to guess your username and password. With a brute force tactic, this would only take a little while.
