I am trying to get remote desktop to work on my pc at home. I tried freeing port 3389 on Norton Internet Security and on my Linksys router. I set the router to forward when to my NAT address when my outside internet address was hit. So, I tried this and it did not work. There is one more detail. Someone told me that I should be able to remote into my pc from that pc iteslf. Well, that failed. So, my question is, does remote destop work from the pc iteself? Also, is this not a proof or is it a proof that it would or would not work if I tried to connect to it from the internet? You may be thinking why don't I just try. We just got in a new house and unfortunately until I call an electrician I can not leave my pc on unless we leave the lights on in the room. Thanks.

Sounds good, as long as everything is configured to use the default port (3389). Some things to check:
In system properties, remote tab, make sure remote desktop is enabled (sorry, have to ask, sometimes it's the easiest thing that is wrong).
The user account you are trying to use must have a password.
If it is not a member of the admin group on the host machine, it must be added to the list of remote users.
If remote desktop is enabled, windows firewall should be configured automatically to allow 3389, but it doesn't hurt to check the windows firewall settings to make sure: on the exceptions tab remote desktop should be checked. Edit it and make sure it is set to TCP 3389.
When connecting from the remote computer, do so explicity specifying the port number (e.g. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3389) in case the remote machine has its registry changed to a different default.
I've never heard of connecting to the local PC. I tried it on mine via loopback IP and got a message saying I was already connected to the desktop on the local machine, which makes sense, hot having installed the hack that allows multiple connections.
Afraid you lost me with the electrician bit - doesn't your computer work with the lights on? Maybe it's me that's dim (grin).
