The other thread pertaining to remote desktop and Vista was thread1583-1265861 but it was closed and dated August of 2006. Now that Vista has been released to the public I need to know if anybody can answer which version of Vista can do both VPN and Remote Desktop(RD).

From the postings that I've seen it only comes preloaded with Business or Ultimate editions.

BUT, I'm looking to purchase a new PC from a retail store that has Home Premium loaded on it. My question is, will I still be able to log on to my work using VPN and RD?

Currently I'm running XP HOME and I was able to generically establish a VPN connection and then download the RD client from Microsoft's website. That enabled me to connect to work and do everything I needed to do.

So 2 questions, can Vista Home Premium 1.) establish a VPN connection and 2.) come with RD client or if it doesn't, is it downloadable or can I use the same RD client I installed on my XP PC?

Has anybody tried this? I don't want to spend $700-800 for a new PC that I can't even connect to work with.

Thanks - Greg

Short answer: yes to both.

Thanks for the quick response and the answer I was hoping for. Although I'm not sure why the thread you listed didn't show up on my search when my search criteria was "Remote Desktop". Anyway, thanks for the info.

Regarding the VPN question, I assume that you're referring to the standard VPN network connection client included with previous versions of Windows used to connect to a Windows Server style VPN. Keep in mind that Vista Home Premium can not join a domain (which may or may not be required).

Yes that is correct. Its the same VPN connectivity that XP Home edition has is what I'll need on Vista Home Premium.

Thanks.

You might get better results using the Google box in the Tek-Tips Search page, and using that to search the Tek-Tips site. I have just about given up on the Tek-Tips search engine.
