I have all my servers in a back room, previously with wint 4.0 i was able to use usrmnger.exe and svrmangr.exe to add users and computers from a laptop at the front desk. I have now upgraded to 2000 server is there a admin pack or something like that that will enable me to administer from the front or do I have to go to the back room everytime a new user is added?

You have 2 options available to you now that you are on Windows 2000 Server.

1. If your clients are Win2K or WinXP, you can install the Adminpak.msi (found on the Win2K CD). This will install the MMC AD Users and Computers snap in. Look for an update to Adminpak.msi on the Microsoft web site for XP or get it from a Win2K3 CD if you have access to one.

2. You can use Terminal Services Client on anything less than WinXP to access your Win2K box in Admin mode and remotely control the server. By Anything I mean DOS or Windows. You will find the client software on the server in C:\Winnt\System32\Clients\tsclient. If your workstation is WinXP you can use the Remote Desktop to remote control the server. You will find that client already installed on WinXP. Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications.

You can also download the Remote Desktops software found on XP from Microsoft and install that on any pc as well from 9x to Win2k. I have tested that this works just fine on a 95 pc.

You can also remote manage another pc/server if you have rights to it by opening the Computer Management on your pc and then right click on the (local) and select manage another computer.
