I am trying to set up my Remote Access server. I have gone thru all of the books and can't seem to find out the reason for my problem. I have 2 NICs in my server. I configure my remote access service. When I start the service, My server drops from my local network. I am not able to ping my server. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The most likely cause of this (if the server isn't actually crashing) is that something funky is happening the routing table on the PC.

Start a dos box and type "route print" before and then after you've done your RRAS bits. You will find soemthing has been added that is causing the server not to see the network anymore.

Look for routes starting with 0.0.0.0 - this is the default route and tells Windows 2000 where to send data it's not sure what to do with. Make sure this is going out to the right network card.

Also type route /? for more help on how to change the routing table.

Hope this helps.

I kind of follow what you mean, but.... do you mean "open a dos box on the server or on a pc on my network. The server is not crashing at all. Just one of the two NICs is not reachable. I am able to ping the other NIC and see the Server. None of the computers on my network will use the remain (operating) NIC to communicate with the Server.
To give some backround. I am setting up VPN server. I am not using DHCP. I put in the second NIC as per the "MASTER BOOK" I have "Windows 2000 MCSE Study System". I followed step by step and can't figure this out. I go thur the wizard-- at the end of the wizard it gives me a warning about the DHCP Relay, as I said I am not using DHCP, so why is this warning appearing? Thanks again for all of the help!

Open a DOS box on the server first.. do a ipconfig /all and check that the NICs are actually using the IP addresses you think they are.

Then do a route print and check our your routing table. With a dual-homed box you're even more likely to run into pesky routing table issues that so you can't see what you need to. I am guessing one of your NICs is going off to a external connection/router if you're creating a VPN box.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the DHCP Relay messages - it's probably just telling you that as a software router it won't forward DHCP requests unless you've installed the relay agent.

I'm certain your issue is down to routing table problems - but it's hard to give more specific advice without knowing what IP addresses you've got going where.. :7 MSN Messenger - ajcurrie@hotmail.com
