Does anyone know how to reinstall the server service for Windows 2000 Pro?

We had a freelance admin who used to enjoy "customizing" our workstation installs and has removed the server service from many workstations. This is preventing us from pushing out some remote installs as it cannot find the admin shares.

Thanks.

Hi,

If the server service doesn't appear in the services control panel, go to control panel -> network and dialup connections -> right click on local area network connection and choose properties, then install the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service.

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services

Scroll down to Server Service, Start it, and set its startup type to be Automatic.

If you have the Win2k Resource Kit, you can use RSERVER.EXE to do this remotely.

Also, you can use the sc.exe from the Reskit. This is usefull in a batch file:

sc start lanmanserver
sc config start=auto lanmanserver

The remote form is acceptable:

sc \\Workstation1 start lanmanserver
sc \\Workstation1 config start=auto lanmanserver

Finally, you could add:
net start server
to the logon batch files.
