I have a 800 MH Duron PC with 384MB and a 60GB drive. Also have a fast CD burner (from Teac).

Win Me is acting up on me. I install, test and deinstall a lot of software so I want to make a "clean install of Win Me"

What I would like help with is recommendations on:
1. What software would be recommended for backing up, backup software or ghosting software. Please recommend specific products as well.

2. Anything special to do besides the format to wipe the drive clean ?

3. Any recomemndation on software and procedures to run Fdisk and reinstall WinMe and my software and data ?

Thanks so much !!

What you may wish to do, is invest in drive imaging software such as Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image. These programs allow to to make an image of your hard drive, which can be saved on another partition or CD-R.

With this method, you can:
[ol]
[li]Create a basic test configuration by doing your clean install. Save an image of this configuration.
[li]Install your software for testing
[li]Erase the HD and restore the saved image. This will bring the PC back to an exact copy of the basic test configuration.
[/ol]

Great posts, both. But, sorry for my ignorance, but I need some more information, especially because I do not understand ghosting software.

The reason for my reinstall is the clean my hard disk, remove garbage, reset registry and so on.

Looks like the ghosting software saves the image, but would it not save the garbge as well, then restore the garbage ?

Please let help me out with this. Any specifics you can give me will help.

Sorry for being unclear.

You would need to wipe everyting first and set it up as you like. When the machine is set up in a basic "clean" configuration, then the image would be made. This would allow you to return to this "clean" state whenever you require.
