Hi all i've followed the instrutions in the link below but am still unable to reinstall IE6. Since editing the registry as suggested in the doc Windows tells me that IE has been uninstalled at logon but when i try to install IE6 SP1 it tells me a newer version is already installed.

This is a WinXP SP2 machine. The reason for the reinstall is that this PC can no longer open web pages, it can ping sites and seems to resolve the name in IE but no content ever appears.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Hey there, i assume this is what you're trying to install:

On that page, it says it was released in 2002, way before SP2 for windows xp came out, and SP2 did some modifications to IE, so thats probably the issue.

Perhaps you can reinstall SP2? Either that or switch to Firefox.

Tried reinstalling SP2 and that didn't work. I have put Firefox on and although it's a great browser we still need IE in some situes. Look like i'll be reinstalling windows.

Before doing anything drastic, try Forum 608 - Browser Issues.

Try System Restore to get back to before you first tried to uninstall IE.

Then try these.

Internet Explorer Fix

Additonally: For Windows XP IEFIX will:
* Starts IE reinstallation using ie.inf method.
* Finally, initiates SFC /SCANNOW" to restore missing system files from XP source path.

If the above fails you can use this article's (checklist) to try and fix any similar problem.

And finally there is always this. Repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files and programs will be untouched.
